January 6 Committee Opts to Subpoena Donald Trump

In the aftermath of riots at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, a congressional committee was formed in order to get to the bottom of this.

In the months since its inception, the January 6 committee has spoken with various individuals in the Trump White House at the time of the riots.

On a consistent basis, the committee has alleged that Trump knew of what was happening at the Capitol, yet refused to call it off because he didn’t want to acknowledge a victory from Biden.

Trump, for his part, says the committee is nothing more than a glorified group of witch-hunters who have a political vendetta against him. Though after months and months of testimony from other individuals close to Trump, the committee is now demanding to hear from him.

This is why the committee unanimously agreed yesterday to subpoena the former president, per Newsmax.

A Closer Look at the Subpoena Against Trump

According to committee vice chair Rep. Liz Cheney, hearing directly from the former president about the events at the Capitol last year is paramount.

Cheney expressly stated Trump was a “central player” in what happened on January 6 and needs to formally answer for it.

However, despite the January 6 committee’s subpoena, there are serious questions as to whether or not Trump would even show up. Many people believe he won’t.

Others project that he’ll try to wait out until the next Congress is in session post-midterms and the current committee is gone.

A spokesperson for the former president reacted to the subpoena yesterday. Trump, through this spokesperson, said the January 6 committee is peddling “meritless rhetoric,” “un-American actions,” and “partisan theatrics.”

Widespread Public Reactions

News of the January 6 committee opting to subpoena Trump quickly went viral. Major news outlets covered this development, while everyday folks took to social media in order to share their thoughts and feedback.

Some Americans believe even if Trump were to show up for the subpoena and testify before the committee, he would repeatedly invoke the 5th Amendment.

At this rate, it remains to be seen what comes from the committee’s decision, if anything. However, supporters of the ex-president certainly aren’t pleased.

Trump supporters used their social media accounts to allege the January 6 committee is targeting Trump for political reasons, namely to sabotage him from running for office again in the 2024 presidential election.

As the January 6 committee moves to compel testimony from Trump, he’s also facing legal action from the New York attorney general over his business practices, along with legal issues with the federal government, owing to classified documents at Mar-a-Lago.
