With Joe Biden’s likelihood of running for president again appearing to be more up in the air, the natural question is “who comes next?”
In recent weeks, there’s been a lot of dialogue about California Gov. Gavin Newsom trying his hand at a presidential run. Yet, Newsom recently announced that he’s got no plans to pursue the White House in 2024 or even in 2028.
During a 60 Minutes sitdown, Joe Biden claimed it’s too early to tell whether or not he’ll run for reelection. This is a notable shift from the president’s months of claiming that he would be running for office again.
Though if Biden decides to go for one and done, then the next favored person amongst Democrats is Vice President Kamala Harris, per The Hill.
Looking at the Numbers
In a scenario where Biden doesn’t go for reelection, 28% of Democrats favor the vice president stepping into his shoes. After Harris, the second most-favored candidate is Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg with 13% backing from the Democratic coalition.
If the Dems decide Biden isn’t their guy in 2024, they won’t be looking to Kamala Harris as the candidate.

Low-tier favored contenders include Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Gov. Gavin Newsom, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren.
Thus far, the vice president has not personally weighed in on the possibility of her running on the head of a Democratic ticket. Though Harris is on record stating that if Biden runs for reelection again, she’ll be the running mate on his ticket.
A Difficult Path Ahead For Biden
At the rate Biden is going, he’s going to have a tough road ahead, should he choose not to bow out of the 2024 presidential election.
Biden, unlike in 2020, won’t be able to campaign on being a unifier during the next cycle. Since getting into the Oval Office, the president’s had ample opportunities to try bringing this country together; yet, he’s refused every single time.
On top of that, Biden’s performance in the arenas of foreign policy, crime, immigration, the economy, etc., will be hammered by whatever Republican he goes up against in the general election.
Election Day is less than 41 days away.

It’s very clear to see that Biden’s made a lot of bad calls that cost the people of this country quite a bit. Making the case that he should be reelected in order to continue on the same course won’t be an easy sell to the American public.
At this point, we’ll all have to see whether Biden attempts to do so anyway or simply decides to pass the baton on to someone else.
