Upwards of one-third of Boris Johnson’s own administration peers, including a number of key Cabinet ministers, marched out and urged him to leave.
He was finally persuaded to do just that.

Where did we come from?
Since Johnson managed to win that landmark vast bulk of 80 chairs in the 2019 general election, a seemingly never-ending string of scandals have undermined his authority.
These range from his appalling management of the COVID-19 pandemic’s early stages to revelations about dubious deals funding luxurious renovation work to his Downing Street apartment.
A string of reports about drunken parties hosted in No. 10 that broke pandemic lockdown regulations, some of which the head of state himself attended, really started to fester.
Johnson barely made it through a leadership contest last month.
About 41% of Conservatives voted to have him removed. He thereafter led his party to two more dismal by-election losses, which forced the resignation of the party chairman.
Recently, Johnson’s treatment of claims regarding sexual assault against former Tory Deputy Chief Leader Chris Pincher became intolerable for many of his colleagues.
Loyal MPs found themselves accidentally misinforming the public by repeating false Downing Street lines on the controversy as the PM’s story changed frequently.
Tuesday night, Sajid Javid resigned as health minister barely two minutes after Johnson offered his regrets. The second-highest-ranking official in the administration, Chancellor Rishi Sunak, submitted his resignation nine minutes later.
In the hours that ensued, a flood of other ministers resigned when their double bomb burst the dam.

Johnson wants to serve as caretaker party leader for the duration of the Conservative Party’s electoral system, which is expected to take up the majority of the next two months.

As per the Institute for Government Research tank, there really is no such thing as an intermediate or temporary prime minister in the British constitution.
The successor will have all the authority of a regular prime minister.
Some Conservatives are skeptical that Johnson won’t overstep the mark if he holds onto power for several weeks or months, despite the rules governing what a caretaker leader should and shouldn’t do.
